Graphite on paper / Graphite sur papier - 13.5"x 21.75"

I start with a trace of a line, pencil upon paper. As I trace more lines, a form emerges from the white of the sheet that I begin to recognize as being familiar to me, such as daily sights of the shadows of the setting sun, of the morning light against the buildings. I seek to capture light- its reflections, shadows, moods, the different levels of its transparency, its silence, omniscience, and versatility. This light is created within transparent volumes: vessels, pods - entities that move submerged in matter that enclose or transport objects, or light- baring their innermost structures. I seek to capture the mundane from new perspectives - a glimpse of time that disappears, a taste of familiarity lost to our dulled senses. I want to build a world that is suspended or floating: fragile to the slightest wisp of air, yet sturdy, vulnerable and open, allowing shadows and light to flirt within and without. With a natural curiosity about architecture and geometry, I am fascinated by planes-the intersection of lines and simple curves. These planes have gradually evolved into volumes that have decidedly more organic and sensual forms, suggesting more movement in the wake of light, leading gently to the next drawing... This is my personal language. My work allows me to reach for a quiet force. I have chosen simple tools: black graphite, white paper. The simplicity encourages me to focus upon the image I create: nuances of gray forming volumes and transparencies cloaked by the mystery of black and white.
