Collins Lefebvre Stoneberger

Emilio Sanchez was born in Camagüey, Cuba in 1921. He began his artistic training at the Art Students League in 1944 when he moved permanently to New York City where he lived until his death in 1999. Throughout his life he traveled extensively and especially to the Caribbean islands where he became fascinated with the play of light and shadow on colored forms that became a dominant characteristic of his works. His early works of the 1950’s are stylized and figurative, depicting themes such as portraits of friends and models, views of New York City and tropical landscapes. In the 1960’s his works became significantly more abstract, though always maintaining a strong sense of naturalism. It is during this decade that his work matured into an individual vision and when he began to develop his well-known paintings of houses and architectural themes. These architectural works stand out for their simplified forms where all superfluous details are eliminated. Stripped down to their essence these structures acquire universal meaning. Here he captured the effect of light on color making it vibrant. Despite the fact that his buildings are often devoid of visible inhabitants, they hold a strong living presence of their own. Throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s he further explored architectural themes by traveling to countries around the Mediterranean. For example in Morocco he was impressed by the stark white vernacular buildings. He also produced streamlined geometric views of New York skyscrapers. In addition to the architectural works Sanchez explored a variety of themes selected for their strong compositional value such as still lifes of fruits and flowers, sailboats, laundry lines and sunsets over the Hudson River. Different from his linear renderings of buildings these other works demonstrate his versatility in painting looser amorphous forms. In the 1990’s Sanchez’s attention focused more on New York urban scenes of storefronts, garages and skyscrapers. An artist with an independent voice and international acclaim, Sanchez has had over sixty solo exhibitions and has been included in numerous group shows in museums and galleries in the United States, Latin America and Europe. His art is well represented in private and public collections including over thirty museums such as the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Museo de Arte Moderno in Bogotá, the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art in Philadelphia.

Il a débuté son apprentissage artistique au « Art Students League » en 1944 alors qu’il s’installait de façon permanente dans la ville de New York où il a vécu jusqu’à sa mort en 1999. Tout au long de sa vie, il a beaucoup voyagé et ce, tout spécialement dans les îles des Caraïbes où les jeux de lumière et les ombres sur des formes colorées l’ont fasciné et sont devenus une caractéristique dominante de ses œuvres. Ses premières œuvres de 1950 sont stylisées et figuratives décrivant des thèmes tels des portraits de ses amis ou de modèles, des vues de la ville de New York et des paysages tropicaux. Dans les années soixante, son travail est devenu sensiblement plus abstrait tout en maintenant de forts éléments du naturalisme. C’est durant cette décennie que son œuvre a maturé vers une vision personnelle où il a commencé à peindre ses maisons et ses thèmes architecturaux bien connus. Ces œuvres architecturales ressortent par leurs formes simplifiées où tout détail superflu est éliminé. Ramenés à leur essence, ces structures acquièrent un sens universel. C’est ainsi qu’il capture l’effet de la lumière sur la couleur, la rendant vibrante. Malgré le fait que ses immeubles sont souvent dépourvus d’habitants, ils témoignent fortement d’une présence vivante Tout au long des années 1970 et 1980, il explore plus intensément les thèmes architecturaux par des voyages en régions Méditerranéennes. À Monaco, par exemple, il a été impressionné par la pure blancheur indigène des habitations. Il a également produit des vues géométriques et aérodynamiques des gratte-ciels de New York. En plus de tout son travail sur les architectures, il a exploré une variété de thèmes choisis pour leur forte valeur de composition tels des natures mortes de fruits ou de fleurs, des bateaux à voiles, des cordes à linges, des couchers de soleil sur la rivière Hudson. Différentes de ses interprétations linéaires d’édifices, ses autres œuvres démontrent sa versatilité à peindre des formes libres et non cristallisées. Dans les années 1990, l’attention de Sanchez s’est concentrée sur les scènes urbaines de New York avec ses devantures de magasins, ses garages et ses gratte-ciels. Artiste à la voix indépendante et acclamé internationalement, Sanchez a eu plus de soixante expositions solo et a été inclus dans de nombreuses exhibitions dans des musées et galeries d’arts aux États-unis, en Amérique latine et en Europe. Son art est bien représenté dans les collections publiques et privées telles le Museum of Modern Art de New York, le Metropolitan Museum à New York, le Museo de Arte Moderno à Bogotá, la National Gallery of Art à Washington D.C., la National Gallery of Australia à Canberra, et le Philadelphia Museum of Art à Philadelphie.
