Jens Diercks was born in Kiel, West Germany, and studied art in British Columbia, which he now calls home. I first met Jens at the South Florida Art Center on Lincoln Road when he unrolled an astonishingly ambitious series of lithographs. He went on to became a member of the Art Center and received studio space, which he quickly filled to the brim with found objects, which became the inspirations for an amazingly prolific and creative body of work. This “cabinet of curiosities” produced several series that he refers to as Function Destruction – chairs, books, suitcases, wood, pianos, beds, tables - all reassembled in varying designs in shallow relief to become allusions to their former selves – an appeal, in some sense, to a common idea of what an object is. Jens told me once that he was a great admirer of Joseph Beuys, a member of the Fluxus movement, responsible for certain aspects of creative practice outside of the institution and into the everyday, radically eroding the boundaries of art. Jens can be seen as the spiritual heir of Marcel Duchamp for his willingness to question our notions of sculpture; Nam June Paik for his inventive use of banal objects; Claus Oldenburg for his humour; and Lucas Samaras for his intellect and witty, and sometimes perverse, creativity.
